GREENACRES MONTESSORI NURSERY SCHOOL

Our school is inspected regularly by the Office of Standards for Education (OFSTED). Their favourable reports (copies available at school), detail how our school operates and conforms to required National criteria. We have recently had a very good report which reflects the dedication and hard work of Hilary Jones, the Manager, and all the staff at the School.

As we are approved by OFSTED we are registered to accept Government funding for eligible three- and four- year-olds.

Within the framework of our Montessori-based curriculum, we actively work towards the ‘Early Learning Goals’ within the ‘Foundation Stage’ of the National Curriculum as stipulated by the Department for Education and Employment (DFEE) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

The six areas of learning are:

  • communication, language and literacy - communicating with one another and developing skills in talking, listening, writing and reading
  • mathematics - using ideas about number, quantity, measurement, shape and space
  • knowledge and understanding of the world - investigating and beginning to understand the things, places and people around them
  • personal and social development - developing confidence and independence while learning to concentrate and to enjoy sharing as part of a group
  • creative development - finding ways to communicate by using colour, shape, sound, texture, movement and stories
  • physical development - improving control and coordination of their bodies while learning to move and to handle equipment.

These areas of learning are all priorities within our curriculum and by using a wide range of materials and activities we ensure that each child is given opportunities for acquiring and developing appropriate skills in all these categories.

The children encounter innumerable opportunities for learning as part of their daily routine at Nursery.  They work alone, in small groups, individually with a teacher or as part of the whole class. Every task they undertake can help underpin their increasing knowledge.  Each child is encouraged to explore and develop at their own pace within the Montessori ‘prepared environment’.

AGE

Children may start as soon as they reach 2 years 6 months.  They can remain until they join a Reception class (usually between 4 and 5 years of age).

Children do not need to be potty trained to start nursery.

TIMES

School is open from 9.30am to 12.45pm every morning during term time (exact dates supplied regularly).

We ask you to arrive no earlier than 9.20am in the cloakroom, as the classroom has to be prepared each day for the children.  The children are not allowed to enter the classroom until 9.30am.

Parents and carers are asked to wait in the cloakroom at home-time (12.45pm).  The classroom door is then opened and the children called one at a time to go into the cloakroom to be collected.

THE EQUIPMENT

A large inventory of Montessori learning equipment is maintained in storage cupboards within the classrooms, and books, toys and art & craft materials are all available for the wide and varied curriculum of Greenacres Montessori Nursery School.

LUNCH CLUB

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we offer an optional extended session for all children.  The cost is currently £3 (payable on the day) and the children remain at school until 1.25pm.  They bring their own packed lunch and enjoy a sociable meal time together and then games.

To reserve a place, you fill in your child’s name on the list in the cloakroom.

STARTING NURSERY

The term before starting Nursery School, we will invite your child to spend a morning at school – only for a short session, so that they can settle in gradually. Talk to them about starting school and discuss all the new and existing friends they may will meet and the fun things they may do.

On the first day of term, we ask you to bring your child along at 10am, after the intial rush and the settling in of other children. Please stay with your child until they are settled, then bid them farewell, assuring them of your return! There is a telephone at school, and you are welcome to telephone during the morning to check on their progress.

Subsequently, once your child is happy to be left at school, please help them to remove their coat and change their shoes in the cloakroom, then accompany them to the classroom to find their name label and say good-bye. When collecting at 12.30pm or 12.45pm, please wait in the cloakroom for the door to open. The children are called out singly to come and meet you in the cloakroom. We expect the same person to drop off and collect your child. If this is not the case, please leave details with one of the teachers.
